Eye Of The Bittern

Yesterdays bittern in front of the Colyford hide, although fairly close, was almost impossible to see with just binoculars.  The camera saw more than me and in the photo below the eye gives away the bitterns position.  Not easy to see even then but this was the best view I had.

A trip to Beer Head for the yellow wagtails this morning proved successful but apart from plenty of swallows, linnets, goldfinches and a peregrine there was not a lot else around at that time.  So sad to see the swallows departing on their epic journey.  Lets hope luck goes with them all.

Spotted Crake and a blue flash

The spotted crake on Black Hole Marsh was visible briefly at the edge of the reeds near the platform when I first got there yesterday afternoon.  It was showing well from the island hide but was a fair distance away from there so I was lucky to see it so close.  Unfortunately it has not been seen at all today despite much searching.

Very few kingfishers around at the moment but I did catch a glimpse of this one flying down river this afternoon.
